Pirelli has abandoned the individual driver tyre choices for 2020 and simply issuing three compounds of tyre for all teams to use.

All the drivers will get 2 sets of hard compound tyres (white), 3 sets of mediums (yellow), and 8 sets of softs (red).

FP1:

This is not a regularly used race track so it lacks the all-important layer of rubber laid down by loads of cars racing on it. So the times started fairly slow and then speeded up as the rubber was laid.

As Ive often said, these practice sessions are often test sessions for the teams and especially FP1 with everyone tending to follow the same sort of programme, with some fast runs before handing back the first set of tyres after 40 minutes. Then some more fast runs before settling down for long runs with different fuel loads to check out tyre performance in race conditions. Thus, times and order is fairly meaningless, i.e. Hamilton down in 19th is because he failed to get any clean laps on the softer tyres early on, but stuck with the programme to go for longer runs. He got enough information with fast sector times so there was no need to go for a complete fast lap although not ideal.

Sainz and Latifi crashed in separate incidents and did no more running while their cars were repaired.

Ferrari turned up with some new aero bits, which might help, but their engine is the cars weakness.

FP2:

Lets hope the advantage the Mercs had over the third placed guy in this session is not an indication of whats to come!

Looking at the way the cars were handling on the track in this session Ricciardo and the McLarens did look good and even the Ferraris seemed better than they did at Mugello.

Much more representative times, etc. for qualifying in most cases.

Albon had his final flying lap time deleted for exceeding track limits, and Norris abandoned his final flying lap.

Q2:

An interesting session with Vettel crashing and bringing out the red flag with 2 minutes and 15 seconds left of the session. Hamilton, having had his first run time deleted for exceeding track limits, was down in 14th place! When the session started it was a mad rush to get over the line before the red lights came on, and he only just made it.
