TYRES

Pirelli allocations per driver for this race are:

3 sets of white-marked hard tyres,

3 sets of Yellow mediums, and

7 sets of Red softs.

And extra set of hard tyres and one fewer of the softs due to the abrasive surface of this track.

FP1:

With the new track surface being very cold the tyres just didn't get up to proper working temperatures. Most drivers on hard tyres but a few used the mediums to mix things up a bit, but most were saving those for use later. As usual, I have recorded the times to the nearest one second interval, but as you can see, they are all over the place and not at all representative.

FP2:

The track has rubbered a bit and the drivers have learnt a bit more of the layout, etc. so the order is a bit more representative of where they should be but not so the times. There’s still more to be shaved off and for the back-end to catch up. I imagine getting the car setup properly for the lack of grip is quite difficult, although these are “supposed” to be the best 20 drivers in the world, so really they should know what they are doing, yes?

FP3:

·      Light rain at the start and increasing throughout so times are meaningless but are included for interest only.

·      At the start Albon and Leclerc were exchanging fastest laps in the 1 minute 50s and then Verstappen bunged in a 1m 48 that was never beaten.

·      The Williams pair didn’t bother, which serves to preserve their tyres – drivers are only allowed three sets of wet tyres for the weekend and they need them later!! Hamilton did go out in the last 5 minutes but just trundled around.

·      It is forecast for the heavy rain to abate by the time qualifying starts but the track will still be wet, and shall sort the men from the boys!!

Q1:

·      Wet> watching the world’s best slipping and sliding about moaning about it being slippery!!

·      With around 7 minutes to go the race director threw the red flags as it was actually getting a bit dangerous!! Eventually the rain stopped and with a bit of help to remove some standing water the session was restarted. Before long Grosjean spun off into the gravel and brought the reds out again. It took a lot less time to remove his car this time and they set off again with 3˝ minutes to go.

·      Interestingly, only the top seven cars got within 107% of Verstappen’s time. Technically that means they didn’t qualify, but I suspect that will be overlooked considering the conditions.

Q2:

·      Rain had gone so track conditions, although still very slippery, were improved, although that didn’t help the Ferraris.

·      As the track speeded up so the drivers tried that much harder and many times were deleted for exceeding track limits. Eventually they settled into a rhythm and produced reasonable results – well, mostly!!

Q3:

·      Although the track got quicker it became apparent that the Mercs were not in the race and that it was going to be between the Racing point and Red Bull pairs..   A mix of Wets and Inters were used by most drivers as The Racing Point cars were going mighty quick on the Inters. Mercedes tried them but their cars don’t work their tyres as much as others, which is good in the dry, but in the wet it means they can’t generate the heat required to get sufficient grip to do the business.

·      Verstappen seemed to have pole sewn up until Stroll put in a mega-lap right at the end, giving him pole on merit. His first in F1 (and probably his last!!!)
