TYRES

Pirelli allocations per driver for this race are:

2 sets of white-marked hard tyres,

3 sets of Yellow mediums, and

8 sets of Red softs.

FP1:

·      Cool (for Bahrain) and overcast but dry. Interestingly one or two yellow flags for the occasion spins, but nobody hit a barrier and nobody broke down out on the circuit!

·      Robert Kubica drove Raikkonen’s car and showed that he really did waste his time driving for Williams. Roy Nissany drove Russell’s car. Nissany is a very mediocre F2 driver who has a test driver contract with Williams.

·      As usual FP1 has been a mix of a test session and checking out tyre performance under different conditions, i.e. low and high fuel loads on short and long runs, and different wing settings, etc. so little can be read into the times and/or the order as we don’t know the configuration each car is in at any given time, except that the long tubs with heavy fuel all do tend to be dome by everyone in the last half hour.

FP2:

With 40 minutes to go Albon lost it out of the last corner and planted the car squarely into the barrier. He was OK but the car was pretty much wrecked on the right-hand side. The lights went green and as a few cars drove out it went red again as a dog was sighted running about on the track. He made good his escape and the session continued. Hamilton, who had been in the garage since doing his run on the Pirelli development tyres, went out and smashed the times.
