TYRES

Pirelli allocations per driver for this race are:

2 sets of white-marked hard tyres,

3 sets of Yellow mediums, and

8 sets of Red softs.

FP1:

·      Driver changes: Pietro Fittipaldi subbing for Grosjean again, and Mick Schumacher getting an outing in this session in Magnussen’s car. Woah!! Schumacher and Fittipaldi? Brings back memories!!!  Ribert Kubica drove Giovinazzi’s car. Hamilton is back at Mercedes so Russell is back at Williams. Shame! Hamilton’s car needed a brake master cylinder change which sidelined him for 40 minutes or so, and both Mercedes only used the hard tyres.

·      Ricciardo only did a couple of laps and suffered a fuel pressure problem so pulled off and set no time.

·      Talking of times, this was very much a non-representative session as the track temperature is higher than at any other point during this event – the others all being held in twilight or night, and almost every team was using it as a test session, many with 2021 parts on their cars.

·      The last corner is subject to track limits penalties and many had lap times deleted. Being the last corner if they do exceed the limit then that lap and the following lap will be affected.

FP2:

A bit representative of what we might get tomorrow. A few failures creeping in as bits of the cars reach the end of their useful life. Raikkonen’s was the most spectacular when his engine caught fire. Russell had a battery failure, and Hamilton had a clutch problem that he initially cured by taking off and reattaching his steering wheel.

FP3:

·      Lets hope that this session is a reasonable pointer toward the grid, although with Mercedes habit of running in practice with a slower mode set on the engine than in qualifying, I doubt it.  The order was set when the track cooled as the sun went down and so it did depend a bit on when you went out.

·      Towards the end we had Albon complaining that his car was understeering everywhere, then he went on a second flying lap on the same tyres and nailed second spot!! There will likely be plenty taking note of that for quali leter!

GRID:

·      This is Verstappen’s first pole position in F1. Really! Blimey!

·      Leclerc penalise three places fro driving into Perez at Sakhir.

·      Perez and Magnusson penalised loads of places for a number of extra component parts.

·      A mixture of soft and medium compound tyres should make for an interesting few opening laps.

RACE:

·      It was like going back to the old days – quite dull, as modern races go.  I made a few notes as the race went on:

·      Lap 6: good battle between Albon and Norris for 4th. Ricciardo passes Ocon for 10th. Albon passes Norris. Perez up to 15th/

·      Lap 7: Perz passes Raikkonen for 14th.

·      Lap 9: Per stopped trackside. Virtual Safety Car activated.

·      Lap 10: Safety Car deployed as they are struggling to remove Perez”s car.  Loads of cars into the pits to change to hard tyres. So that’s this race neutralized!

·      Lap 14 onwards: Leclerc going backwards on worn Mediums.

·      Lap 23: Leclerc Pits for hard tyres.

·      Lap 36: Vettel, only in 10th pits and drops to 15th.

·      Lap 40: Ricciardo running 4th pits and drops to 7th.

·      Lap 55: Bottas and Hamilton nowhere near Vaerstappen’s pace. Maybe they should have left Russell in Hamilton’s car…!!!

·      Some other stuff happened but I couldn’t raise the enthusiasm to make a note of it.
