Individual driverís tyre choices:

Pirelli is abandoning the individual driver tyre choices for 2020 and simply issuing three compounds of tyre for all teams to use.

All the drivers will get 2 sets of hard compound tyres (white), 3 sets of mediums (yellow), and 8 sets of softs (red).

FP1:

As usual, one shouldnít read too much into the times and order for this session.

Robert Kubica (yes, that Robert Kubica!) drove Giovinazziís Alfa Romeo and Jack Aitken (of Formula 2 fame) drove Russellís.

Magnussen did his installation lap and then the car was up on its stands while the mechanics worked on the battery.

Latifi parked his Williams with a gearbox problem quite early on.

FP2:

Again, times and running order are not very representative of what we might see later – except that the forecast is for very heavy rain tomorrow and if Qualifying is abandoned what you see here could well be the grid – no doubt to poor DanniRicís chagrin as he over-cooked it at one of the fast corners and spun it into the barrier, causing extensive damage and a limp, although the medical centre have declared him fit.

Of the others, Haas and Williams are where I expect them, but the Ferrariís and Hamilton are not doing so well.

FP3:

Due to incessant heavy rain this session was first delayed indefinitely and then, after 40 minutes with no let up the session was cancelled.

Q1:

Start delayed by 46 minutes due to very heavy rain and flooded track. Still wet when they got going so all on full wet tyres.

Times tumbled as the track developed a dry-ish line.

Grosjean ran wide early on and returned to the pits, but they found a water pump problem and he never went out again.

Giovinazzi went off and distributed some debris so the session was red-flagged, and as there were only seconds left, that was it.

Q3:

Raining heavily again. Hamiltonís pole lap was remarkable, but Verstappen would have been closer (although still in second) had he not spun at the last corner at the last moment of the session.

GRID:

Norris penalised 3 places for passing under yellow flags in FP1 yesterday, and Leclerc penalised 3 places for impeding Kvyat in Q2.

Rain, the great leveller, shows us drivers of real skill. We all know that Hamilton, Verstappen, and Bottas are quick in the rain, but Norris and Ocon did very well. Even Sainz did well now heís in a decent car.I wonder how he felt about watching his future team have one car knocked out in Q2 and the other in P10 yet again!! Once again Haas, Alfa Romeo and other Williams (only Latifiís second Grand Prix race) at the back.

Itís forecast for a dry race tomorrow, so itíll be interesting to see who moves up the field and who moves down!
