Pirelli has abandoned the individual driver tyre choices for 2020 and simply issuing three compounds of tyre for all teams to use.

All the drivers will get 2 sets of hard compound tyres (white), 3 sets of mediums (yellow), and 8 sets of softs (red).

FP1:

·      Roy Nissany (also ran in FIA Formula 2 Championship) drove Russell’s car.

·      I bet Ferrari are pleased their supporters aren’t at Monza to boo them back into their garage. I understand they know which hotel the team are staying in – that would be interesting to see this evening when the team get back there.

FP2:

·      At last the FIA have decided that the white line is the limit of the track – as per their own rules!! Plenty of drivers had their lap times deleted when they transgressed the rule. Notable were Albon and Ricciardo both of whom would have recorded times good enough for the top five otherwise.

·      And Ferrari continue to do badly. It seemed to me that the cars were handling so badly that with both drivers pushing hard to get decent times only succeeded in finding the car’s limits by spinning off.

·      Norris was in and out of his garage as the team tried to sort out an engine problem, then in the dying minutes he came out and put in an excellent lap!

FP3:

·      I’m sorry to harp on about track limits but… The FIA declared this morning that the white line IS the limit of the track and that the car must have at least a part of it (front or rear tyre) INSIDE the white line, i.e. on the grey stuff. Unless it’s the second Lesmo or your name in Bottas. Everyone was exceeding this limit at the 2nd Lesmo but it wasn’t even being mentioned by the commentators! Then Bottas set the fastest time having clearly exceeded the limit at the Parabolica (turn 11). So Sainz should have been fastest but the stewards did not delete Bottas’s time so officially it stands. If this had been qualifying I think more would be made of it.

·      The red flags came out late in the session when Ricciardo had what appeared and sounded like an electronics problem and pulled off onto the grass leadig into the first Lesmo. Eventually the lights went green again with 3 minutes to go, enough for a flying lap and all but Norris (and obviously Ricciardo) went out. Hamilton, on the last flying lap came across a gaggle of cars on their in-lap going far too slowly and one pulled out to pass another as Hamilton, going almost 200mph had to take avoiding action  - two wheels on the grass. The difference in speed was frightening. And the FIA are supposed to have addressed this sort of thing!

Q1:

·      On the second run there was the  we saw in Practice shambles as cars all go out together (except the Mercs who just went out and went fastest!) and then jostle for position to try and get behind another car for a tow while the other car is trying to manoeuvre so he get a tow from the car in front of him. As it turned out they all got in each other’s way and nobody improved their times.

·      Vettel failed to negotiate himself out of trouble and abandoned the last lap leaving him out of qualifying. His first Q1 elimination.

Q2:

·      On the second run Ricciardo was doing well until he pushed a tad too much and ran wide across some gravel and compromised his lap.

·      The first time both Ferrari’s qualified outside the top-10 since 1984, and, I believe, the first time ever at Monza…!!

Q3:

Hamilton’s lap was recorded as the fastest F1 lap ever – 164mph, but it is only a “track record”. “Lap records” are only recorded when they occur during a race. Incidentally he was only 0.069s ahead of Bottas, who was 0.808s ahead of Sainz.

GRID:

The stewards declared they would investigate Ocon impeding Raikkonen in Q1 at the end of the session, so I await the outcome of that investigation. But that aside this is tomorrow’s provisional grid..

RACE:

With Bottas making a slow start, Verstappen dropping back, Hamilton getting a penalty for breaking the rules by entering the pits when the pit entranced was closed, we were handed an exciting race with different drivers at the front and some good racing down the field. It also makes a lot of difference in the league – which is always good.
