FP1:

As usual the actual times and mostly the order is of no real relevance in this session except to confirm that the top runners are still at the top and the usual suspects are at the bottom.

Antonio Giovinazzi drove Magnussen’s Haas during the session but the car didn’t seem too well suited to this track. I wonder if their drivers have the ability/knowledge to properly set up the car, or at least to know what needs to be changed once the engineers have set them up!

Kvyat had a “no power” situation right at the end of the session and had to bring his car back very slowly Hopefully it’ll be fixed in time for FP2.

FP2:

Much the same as FP1 in that there were no surprises. They do long runs during the second half of the session and the Mercedes pair looked well in charge during those as well as the fast single laps.

Q1:

·      Light rain dampened the rack. Those who didn’t go out on Intermediate tyres at the start of the session were soon into their pits to change onto them!

·      At the end of the session the rain had stopped and the track was drying out, so the later you were their the faster you could go. So, there was Alonso with nothing to lose (he already has a 30-place penalty for all the changes they’d made to his engine and associated bits - ridiculous!) changing onto supersofts right at the end and crossed the line fractions before the flag came out. He flew round and knocked nearly 1˝ seconds off the previous best!

·      Hulkenberg continued his good running, due to a new floor being fitted to his Renault.  Good to see him up there.

·      Ricciardo stopped trackside after setting his time, which then was fastest, when his turbo called it a day.  They red-flagged the session to remove his car but the rules state he cant’ participate any more.

Q2:

·      Track still slightly damp but OK for slick tyres. Track continued to dry throughout.

·      Palmer, without the new floor, missed out on Q3 by a very small amount, but good to see Vandoorne getting through.

·      Williams drivers having a hard time for the team’s 40th anniversary!

Q3:

·      Time in the last session for two runs. Track now dry but reports that it will rain by the end of the session so everyone out for the first run. Grosjean complained that Hamilton had blocked him as he came to the end of his fast lap and found Hamilton winding up for his fast lap.

·      No much change in the order for the second run . Hamilton put in a stormer of a lap to take pole.

·      Bottas ruined his lap by running wide at the beginning.

·      Grosjean went quicker than his first run but didn’t improve his position – in fact he got beaten by Vandoorne!

·      The rain didn’t come!

GRID:

Bottas had an unscheduled gearbox change so incurred a 5-place penalty, and Alonso had all manner of new Honda bits amounting to a ludicrous 30-place penalty.  If there are no more penalties then this is tomorrow’s grid…
