FP1:

Many teams arrived at Hockenheim with new aerodynamic bits – mostly wings.Williams also had changes to the floor of the car, especially at the back after the trouble theyíve had with the airflow stalling under braking. They ran with so much flow-viz paint on the car it almost looked like a new livery! On the whole the front wings are getting so complex itís getting ridiculous. This happened before and the regs were changed to force the teams to simplify them, so next year the same thing will happen and weíll see the end of wings with so many different bits (or elements) that itís difficult to count them – until the FIA forget and leave the door wide open to the same thing again!!

Nicholas Latifi drove Oconís car, and Antonio Giovinazzi drove Ericssonís.

FP3:

Raining from the outset. The way the current regulations are setteams will not send drivers out in the wet in a practise session unless they really need to because they are limited on the number of sets of tyres they have, and they are not allowed spare cars so if the driver aquaplanes off into the barrier hard enough he wonít have a car to qualify in.Doesnít seem right to me.

Tines are totally meaningless, but I suspect the Leclerc-lovers will make a thing about how wonderful he is to get to fastest time!!!

Grosjean down didnít set lap times and are shown in the order they went out on installation/exploratory laps.

Q1:

The track was still a bit damp in places after the morning rain.

Towards the end and Hamilton must have been getting desperate to try and oust the Ferrariís from the top and started to get a bit ragged. He went over one of the jerbs on the way out of a corner and, despite later denying anything was untoward he went wide and bounced over the end of the kerb and some rough ground. It is suspected that this jolting caused a hydraulic pressure problem and jammed him in 4th gear. Then the engineers told him to stop, but he kept going trying to sort the problem on a slow drive back to the pits, but all that happened was that the whole thing just ground to a halt. I wouldnít be surprised if we hear he has a penalty for having to fit a new gearbox!!

Q2:

      Dry track.

Ericsson went off across the gravel and brought a load onto the circuit and brought out the red flag just as Verstappen and both Renaults were going for fast laps!Second runs produced no surprises.

Ricciardo didnít bother running as he has a raft of penalties and will start from the back anyway. And, of course, Hamilton had no car.

RACE:

My word, what a race. Itís always good when rain affects the running, and this time there wasnít much and a few teams gambled on it being worse, changed to intermediate tyres, then had to change back to slicks.Such fun.

Vettel crashed when his car went straight on at the slow Sachscurve. I think he just fell victim to the wet track on slick tyres.

If you didnít see the race and want a report, just let me know and Iíll bung one in here.
