FP1:

·      Lando Norris (F2 front runner) drove Alonso’s car.

·      Although there was rain in the air at the beginning of the session it came to nothing.

·      Ricciardo lost nearly the entire session when he had an ignition snag resulting in a loss of power on his installation lap. They worked on his car and he got out with 5 minutes to go, and went into 6th in two laps!

·      Vandoorne lost quite a bit of time with a brake problem, but managed to get out at the same time as Norris, who was quicker than him. Although Vandoorne ran fewer laps, Norris had never driven the circuit in an F1 car. The cars could have easily been set up differently as the drivers tackled different aspects of running (qualifying-race-high fuel-low fuel, etc.) but somehow I don’t think so – I reckon it could just as easily been a bit of a shoot out for the team to do a quick assessment between the two to see who will partner Sainz next year!!!  As it was, Vandoorne ended his session early with a hydraulic snag.

FP3:

·      The one second gaps are a characteristic of the longer circuit, but the last 15 minutes of high speed qualifying simulator runs, which might have closed the gaps slightly, were ruined when Vandoorne came up to pass Bottas at the top of hill onto the long Kemmel straight. With a combination of Bottas taking the normal line out of the right hander onto the straight and Vandoorne choosing to go to his left you have Bottas unsighted and Vandoorne not experienced enough to know where the car in front will be going. The result is Vandoorne being ridden wide onto the grass and spinning his way off the track. Fortunately he did little or no damage to his car so he should be okay for qualifying – not that the McLaren’s performance up to now will make going out worth while, save that he must do a couple of laps to get on the grid. The resulting red flag to get Vandoorne’s car out of the way meant that the remaining 19 cars all tried to get out and around to the flag in two minutes in order to get at least one fast lap on qualifying set-up. Of the five that made it no improvements made any difference.

Q2:

Hulkenberg did not bother running as his penalties for unscheduled component changes will put him at the back of the grid.  Bottas, with similar penalties, did go out as a ploy to assist Hamilton in Q3.

It started to rain at the end of the session.

Q3:

·      I’ve said it before and I make no apology for saying it again – I just love it when it rains, but even more so in changeable conditions.

·      Spits and spots at the start of the session but not enough for intermediates, but then it raining more heavily and most came in for intermediates except the Force India’s but it was too wet for slicks so they came in as well.

·      It was all a matter of timing.  Red Bull and Raikkonen had insufficient fuel to stay out for extra laps when the rain eased of unexpectedly and the track got faster. Red Bull also had a low-downforce aero setup so they suffered in the wet, but will be well placed in the dry tomorrow.

·      Bottas went out at the beginning to assist Hamilton with a tow down the main straight, but a spin in the rain scuppered that idea and he returned to the pits.  As it was, Hamilton was able to stay out and did a good job in the rain, as did the Force India boys.
