FP1:

·      Recent heavy rain was easing off at the beginning of the session but it was still very wet.  As the session went on the rain eased off more, then increased and then eased again, so it depended on when you went out as to how well you went and what value you could get from being out there in the first place.  Eventually towards the end of the session the rain stopped, the track started to dry out and the few drivers who went out got some reasonable times as they knocked 4 seconds a lap off the earlier times.

·      Ricciardo fans had a groan at the beginning when he went out with a new Renault donkey in the back and had a problem straight away.  He managed to get back to the garage where they fiddled about with software settings and eventually he went out again and was OK.

·      Norris had Vandoorne’s car but didn’t impress anyone.

·      Vettel only did four laps before they started to take his car apart so they could change the spare gearbox for FP2, which is expected to be dry, which is why most people stayed in the garage after a couple of runs in the wet.

FP2:

·      Dry throughout, so drivers were in the order pretty much where you’d expect them to be.

·      Ericsson went off at the first chicane on his first lap. It looks as though his DRS flap not only failed to close immediately he applied the brakes but was slightly over-extended so was providing slight lift when he needed lots of downforce. The result was a car doing somewhere around 220mph under pretty much it’s own steam, snapping left into the nearby wall destroying the front end and digging into the grass, barrel-rolling down the road, shedding bits of itself as it went, thankfully dissipating lots of the energy and ending up the right way up, allowing Ericsson to walk away – albeit a bit shakily!!!

·      When the lights went green again 20 minutes of the session had been lost so there was a lot of cars on track and lots of running.

·      Vettel, having already set the fastest time and was doing good long run times, paid a trip to the barrier on the outside of the parabolica bend but only clipped the rear wing end plate.  He nevertheless drove back to the garage and ended his session.

FP3:

·      Dry session although a little patch or two left over from earlier rain.

·      Sauber pulled an all-nighter to get Ericsson’s car up and running.

·      Hulkenberg stopped running early after his DRS flap jammed open. What’s going on? Surely these ‘professionals’ can build a fail-safe system so as soon as anything goes awry with the flap, for any reason, it fails closed. Millions and millions of euros and they can’t get a little thing like this right.  By the way, a driver made a comment yesterday about banning DRS because of Ericsson’s failure.  Well, they better ban tyres because of numerous failures in the past!!!

Q1:

·      Despite nearby rain it stayed dry.

·      Williams did better than of late, and Sauber didn’t.

·      As you can see Perez missed out of advancing to Q2 by 1/1000th of a second!

Q2:

·      Dry from now on.

·      Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were getting extensive penalties fro engine changes, etc. so didn’t bother going out.

·      Stroll did well again, as did Gasly.

·      Again, the difference between going through to the next round and not was 1/1000th of a second!!!

GRID:

·      The FIA say they apply penalties in the order they hear about them. Seems like in reverse order!!!  They knew about Ricciardo’s a while ago. Hulkenberg had a 10-place penalty awarded at Spa and then the team decided to do some engine changes, etc. Ericsson’s engine change was brought about following his accident in FP2.

·      Following a protest lodged by Renault the FIA have declared the floor of Grosjean’s car to be illegal and have excluded him from the results of the Italian GP. Therefore all FGP points awarded to him have been removed.
