FP1:

Rain affected session started late.  Sirotkin ran in Hilkenberg’s car, Galael ran in Sainz’s car, Leclerc ran in Ericsson’s car and Giovinazzi ran in Magnussen’s car.  Massa’s car had a “potential hydraulic” problem and did not come back out after the installation lap.

FP2:

Dry session. Pretty ordinary until Bottas drove over a drain cover at a high speed right-hander and it lifted from its mounting.  Raikkonen missed it by a fraction but Grosjean didn’t and ran his rear right over it, shredding the tyre in an instant and sending the hapless Haas driver across the gravel and into the barrier. He was okay but the car was a mess.  The red flags came out with half an hour or so to go, but there was no way they would fix the situation so the session was ended.  Long runs were curtailed, and Mercedes lost any track time to try and fix the balance problem they have.

FP3:

·      Pretty straightforward session. Mercedes splitting their car set-ups to see if they can cure their handling problems, but it seems not!

·      Right at the end of the session Vettel was seen crawling but to the pits with a very rough sounding engine, and Vertappen on a slow lap made himself look silly when he forced Palmer on a fast lap to turn in early for the last corner and then turned in tight. Palmer locked up because he was now in the wrong place and had to try and avoid Verstappen, clipping his front wing against the Red Bull rear left tyre.

Q1:

Following Vettels engine electrics problems inFP3 the mechanics did a 4 hour job of changing the power unit (engine internal combustion unit) in only 2 hours, so he was able to get out.  Trouble was, it seems there was a connection problem between the engine and the turbo and there was no power. They didn’t get that fixed so he failed to qualify. There is no doubt the stewards will let him start.
