FP1:

Not much to report, except the Mercedes pair didn’t use the hypersoft tyre, so don’t worry about them being 6th and 8th, and Leclerc kissed the barrier on the apex coming off the bridge and wrecked his front right suspension. He can’t afford to do that next year!!!

FP2:

Vettel lost all his race preparation track time with a coolant leak, most likely brought about when he “kissed” the wall quite significantly with his right side.

FP3:

Pretty uneventful session. Ferrari’s went out and set a stonking time quite early on and Vettel only improved on that a bit later. If this session was an example of the general pecking order then the usual suspects, Toro Rosso, Sauber, and Williams are in trouble.

Q1:

·      Session started at 2100hrs local time and was much cooler than all the sessions run up until then.

·      Mercedes, having set their times with the ultrasoft tyre (while all around them were using hypersofts) they then took a risk and did not run their cars at the end of the session and we watched Hamilton sink down the order from ‘quite comfortable’ to ‘oh dear’!! A bit too close if you ask me.

Q3:

·      Say what you like about Lewis Hamilton, and I often do, but that pole lap was flawless.

·      There has also been talk about the gap between the top three teams and the rest, and this is amply illustrated with the almost complete second a lap difference between Ricciardo, who had a poor lap by his reckoning, and Perez, who was quite pleased with his!

RACE:

·      Quite an eventful race, starting off with Perez putting his teammate into the wall (again) and later getting frustrated with not being able to pass Sirotkin, so when he did he drove into him!!

·      Vettel’s strategy continued to go awry so he was unable to do anything about Hamilton nor Verstappen, who drove a brilliant race.

·      While things settled down at the front there were enough battles going on down the field to keep us amused.
