FP3:

      Dry session.

1st red flag when Bottas scraped the wall and damaged his right side, especially his right rear wheel, and left debris and torn astro-turf behind.

2nd red flag when Raikkonen lost it and planted himself into the barrier and had to have the car craned out of the way.

Q1:

Grosjean crashed into the barrier with a few minutes left of the session and brought out the red flag, which likely prevented Gasly and Stroll from getting into Q2 as they were on quick laps at the time.

GRID:

There are a raft of penalties to be applied and as usual, because the FIA apply them in the order they were advised of the need there is no telling how they will affect the ultimate grid – and after Grosjeanís crash there may be a penalty for him as wellÖ

I originally applied the penalties strictly numerically but that proved to be different from the way the FIA applied them (donít ask!). This is the latest information I haveÖ

RACE:

Before Vettel left the garage the mechanics had the engine cover off and were dealing with a problem. When he arrived on the grid from the formation lap with a spark plug problem and the mechanics set to work again. They got him ready for the start but it was immediately evident that he was down on power and after losing places the team brought him in to retire.

Sainz had already ran wide and damaged his car against the tyre barrier enough to only manage a few yards more before giving up the ghost. They brought out the safety car to control the field while they removed his car.

At the start Verstappen got past Ricciardo into third place, while Ocon did the same, demoting Ricciardo to 5th.Further down Hulkenberg forced his way past Raikkonen who went wide and dropped to 14th, spending the rest of his race recovering!

Only a few laps later Ericsson crashed headfirst into the barrier but they were able to clear him away under the Virtual Safety Car.

Until the pitstops there was plenty going on through the field, afterwards the action eased off with isolated pockets of racing, like Raikkonen catching Hulkenberg for 6th while Verstappen closed on Hamilton in the lead.

After 40 laps Hulkenberg reported that his DRS flap had jammed open, so he had to pit where the view of a Renault mechanic bashing hell out of the flap to close it did not bode well, and they retired the car.

When Massa had Magnussen and Grosjean close behind him he unaccountably left the door open for Magnussen to dive up the inside only for Massa to try closing the door far too late, making contact with his right front wing against Magnussenís front wheel, which thankfully didnít puncture.

Stroll had a moment when his front right tyre deflated as he was turning through the esses. He got half way around a left before the tyre came off the rim and he scooted across the infield of the right hand bit and was lucky not to collect a passing Red Bull!

It all got a bit exciting towards the end but Verstappen didnít catch Hamilton, and Alonso, whoíd closed right up to Massa didnít make it past.
