 FP1:

Not much to say regarding this session except that four regular drivers were replaced by “Friday morning drivers’: Norris in place of Alonso, Giovinazzi in place of Ericsson, Markelov in place of Sainz, and Lafiti in place of Perez.

Ricciardo had a sidepod fire and lost most of his long-run time.

FP3:

·      Fairly ordinary third practise.

·      McLaren slow – probably due to Alonso concentrating on race setup for his car as he is going to start at the back anyway, and Vandoorne because he’s slow anyway!!

·      Another example of Ferrari OP Management weakness getting the session timing all wrong at the end and sending Vettel to a red light at the end of the pit lane, and having to stop Raikkonen as he left the garage to go and practise the start routine. What is going on there?

Q2:

Rather academic session as the Renault didn’t bother as the three drivers above them were being relegated to the back of the grid anyway, and the Renault boys will now have choice of tyre for the race.

Q3:

Two runs in this session as usual. Ericsson didn’t go in the first one, and Bottas was faster than Hamilton. In the second Bottas improved his time so Hamilton aborted his lap. Others to improve their times were Vettel, Magnussen (up from 7th), Perez, and Grosjean.

As it was Magnussen was still over a second off the pace of Rakkonen.

GRID:

Following a request to tidy up the grid penalties the FIA have determined that penalties are warded as the “offence” is committed, i.e. as they drive out of the pit lane, thus the order shown below.

Additional Penalties resulted in a slightly different rear end of the grid than last night, but it’s still a ludicrous situation…!!!
