FP1:

á      Wet session. It did stop raining but the circuit hardly dried out much, although the later you went out the faster your lap time. As usual in the wet, the one-second gaps are fairly meaningless.

á      Norris used VandoorneŐs car again, and Sean Galael (the Indonesian F2 driver) used HartleyŐs.

á      Leclerce ran wide and dragged loads of gravel onto the circuit so the red flags came out so they could clear it up.  The rule is that as soon as the flag is shown the drivers must reduce speed to a limit sent to their dashboards electronically – and, of course be sensible and slow down properly.  Vettel didnŐt slow enough and had to visit the stewards.

FP3:

Dry. After two wet session yesterday everyone was out to get as much running as possible in this last hour before qualifying.  There was a mixture of compound and fuel loads for qualifying and race simulations, so actual timings and order are not very representative.

Q1:

á      Powers-that-be determined that anyone exceeding track limits at turn 19 will have their lap time deleted immediately.  Why just turn 19? This is the sort of thing that makes F1 stupid.  It should be EVERYWHERE. Leave the track, for whatever reason – lose that lap time.

á      Towards the end of the session Verstappen ran a bit wide and his right rear wheel ran over a kerb set at 90 degrees to deter drivers running wide (so that worked!) and it broke his suspension so I suppose it did work!! He got back to the garage but that was it for the rest of qualifying.

Q2:

The two Toro Rosso boys didnŐt bother running as they were going to incur severe engine change penalties and end up at the back of the grid, and Verstappen had no car to play with as they worked at getting his right rear suspension replaced.

GRID:

Vettel awarded a three-place penalty for deciding he didnŐt have to slow down for the red flag like everybody else so his arrogance was rewarded with a three-place grid penalty. And quite rightly so.  Gasly and Hartley had engine changes that exceeded the laid down limit so incurred enormous penalties so start at the back. Red Bull found they had to change VerstappenŐs gearbox after he damaged the car so incurred a 5-place penalty.
