FP1:

Verstappen had an electrical problem straight away and they worked on it throughout the session but he never got back out.

Which tyres you had on and other factors such as fuel loads played a major part in times, etc. so I wouldn’t read too much into them.

I’ve put the fastest time on the table, and then the one second gaps from that time down to the slowest.

FP2:

Rather uneventful session.  Raikkonen was released unsafe from his pit right with a loose front right wheel towards the end of the session so should get a grid penalty, but being Ferrari…

Very ordinary 3rd practice. I hope Williams performance isn’t replicated in qualifying!! Toro Rosso seem to have a good set up with the new parts on their cars – just got to get the Honda engines to keep running now!!

Q1:

Verstappen, running fourth, spun into the barrier with 5 minutes or so to go and wrecked the car. Grosjean ran wide on his last lap and Leclerc spun in the last corner.  Alonso set his time before Grosjean.

Verstappen’s car not repaired. Hamilton only driver out on soft tyres (the rest on supersofts) so will start the race thus equipped.I wonder how Alonso feels that both Honda-engine cars are ahead of both McLarens!

Race:

·      Quite a good lap, as long as you didn’t have Red bull, Ricciardo and/or Verstappen in your team!! Ricciardo suffered a total electrics failure while Verstappen clashed with Hamilton trying to get by when there wasn’t that much room and pushing the Mercedes wide Hamilton held his ground and stayed on the track, the result being Verstappen cutting his trye on Hamilton’s front wing. He got back to the pits but on the out lap was told by the team to stop the car – too much damage (probably the diff) had been done.

·      Raikkonen came into the pits but there was a problem getting the old rear left wheel off but he was given the release lights prematurely and runs over a mechanic on the way out.  He stops almost immediately still with the old tyre on and the mechanic with what is believed to be a broken leg. Maybe time for Ferrari to review the use of lights alone to control their cars leaving the pit.

·      Hamilton did a good job getting up to 4th, but despite a brief play at the front during pitstops he was pretty much running in 4th. Bottas needed one more lap to take Vettel at the end. Vettel managed his tyres very well, especially considering he was on softs that they probably were originally planning to changed at a second stop. The boy done good.

·      Pierre Gasly had a weekend to write home about.  I wonder howMcLaren are feeling about the Honda engine now?  I think I said it would be ironic if Honda came up with a good engine this year…!!

·      So, an exciting race, and without Ric, Ver and Rai it let the likes of Ericsson score rare points.

·      Perez and Hartley penalised for formation lap rule infringement.
