Tyres

Individual driversí tyres will be allocated by Pirelli for the opening races. I canít find anything just yet about quantities. What I do have isÖ

Drivers MUST keep at least one set of the softest tyre for Q3.(This set will be returned to Pirelli after Q3 for those who qualify in the top 10.Remaining drivers will not have used them in Q3 so will not hand anything back.)

Drivers MUST use at least two different compounds during the race.

Because the 2017 tyres are so new the FIA has decreed that drivers will be allocated 2 sets of the hardest compound available for that race, seven sets of the softest available and four sets of the compound between the two.

 FP1:

The young Russian driver Sergey Sirotkinwas supposed to get another outing, this time driving Hulkenbergís car, but only got as far as the second corner before his engine stopped. They got him back to the garage to work on it but he never went out again.Money well spent, eh?

Some way in there was a little bit of drama when Oconís Force India engine cover flew off as he braked from high speed at the end of the straight. The temporarily red flagged the session while they picked up the pecies.

Other than that it was a pretty normal first practice session.

FP3:

Palmer had an engine problem before setting a time and they are now changing his engine!! Remains to be seen how he fares in qualifying had so little running, including none in FP3!!

The McLarens are struggling to get the best out of the cars but they were still faster than the Saubers, and Alonso drove the wheels off the car to get up to 14th!!

Palmer caught a kerb at the end of the session and put his car in the wall, but heís OK and the car will be OK for tomorrow.Whether he damaged anything like a gearbox, etc. requiring a change and resulting in a penaltyremains to be seen.

Q3:

It looks like Hamilton is struggling to get the balance right on his car.The ultra-soft tyres just donít seem to work for him. Maybe if he were better at setting up his car he would be quicker!

RACE:

Alonso and McLarenís woes continue. This time he didnít even get to the grid when his carís energy recovery system failed and stranded him out on track. The car was close to the pit entry but the starter still had to abort the process and impose another formation lap while they cleared the track.

Bottas had a great start, getting in front of both Ferraris and stayed there.Hamilton got away in fourth and stayed there, his troubled weekend continuing and having lots of high temperature problems.

Further back into turn 2 Grosjean had a go at the inside of Palmer who had a Sauber on his outside and had his line through the corner pretty much dictated for him. With Palmer on a tight line, Grosjean negotiating the kerb hed nowhere to go but into the side of Palmer. The result of that was pitching Palmer into a spin which Grosjean couldnít avoid – scratch two cars in one go.

Ricciardo didnít get very far when his right rear brake started smoking and he reported that it was on fire.He cruised slowly back to the pit to retire.

From then the race settled down into a fairly boring procession until the last few laps when Vettel started to close on Bottas. The Fin made one mistake on lap 39 and locked up his front left and put a small flat spot on the tyre, but it didnít cause too much of a problem except that Vettel was able to get quite close. The last three laps did get quite exciting but it seems Bottas had things under control and went on to win his first F1 race.
