FP1:

Nicholas Latifi took over Perez’s car for this session.

Hulkenberg had a power train problem.  The engine cut out, he got it started again but then the gears would not engage.  The session was red-flagged so they could remove the car from the track.  Other than that, fairly uneventful

Worth noting that this is the first session that Verstappen has topped this year.

FP2:

Sainz ended his session early with a spin into the wall. Some time later Vandoorne ran wide into the wall and broke the suspension on the right side of his car.

Ricciardo’s car was worked on for most of the session but he came out with half and hour to go and put in some competitive times.

Very uneventful. Watching Verstappen going around for yet another fastest session time, he really does look very stable and ‘in charge’!!

Q1:

·      Grosjean came out of his garage as the lights went green and his new Ferrari engine went pop, leaving a trail of thick white smoke down the pitlane. That was the end of that.

·      Some time into the session Ericsson went wide into the wall and broke his front suspension and how he missed the slower-moving Red Bull in front of him I shall never know!

Q2:

Towards the end we saw Vettel hurtling down the back straight at full chat while four or five cars were wandering down on both sides of the track trying to make space for their final fast lap!  We also saw Ricciardo drive the fastest ever lap around this circuit.

RACE:

Big accident on lap one when Stroll and Hartley touched, causing Stroll to get a left rear puncture, so as they went into the right-hander side by side, Stroll oversteered on the exit and slid into Hartley pinning him against the wall and resulting in a big crash. Both drivers were unharmed.

It all got a bit boring in the middle and although it looked like it might liven up towards the end it didn’t, and many were relieved that some airhead who’d been given the chequered flag to wave did so early and nullified the last lap.  Under the rules the race was declared the lap before the premature end so only a 68 lap race instead of 70.
